An Extremum Principle for a Neutron Diffraction Experiment
نویسندگان
چکیده
An extremum principle was postulated by Horne, Finkelstein, Shull, Zeilinger, and Bernstein in order to derive the physically allowable parameters for sinusoidal standing waves governing a neutron in a crystal which is immersed in a strong external magnetic field: `̀ the expectation value of the total potential á V ñ is an extremum .’’ We show that this extremum principle can be obtained from the variational principle used by SchroÈ dinger to derive his nonrelativistic wave equation. We rederive the solutions found by the above-mentioned authors as well as some additional solutions .

Evaluation of Substruructure Parameters by Peak Profile Analysis of High-resolution Neutron Diffraction Spectra
The peak profile shape analysis has been preferentially used in evaluation of X-ray and synchrotron powder diffraction pattern. However, neutron diffraction facilities of new generation frequently offer the instrumental resolution high enough to study efficiently the effects of broadening of neutron diffraction profiles. The present paper describes the procedure for a detailed evaluation of Bra...
متن کاملNeutron Diffraction and Optics of a Noncentrosymmetric Crystal. New Feasibility of a Search for Neutron EDM
Recently strong electric fields (up to 10 V/cm) have been discovered, which affect the neutrons moving in noncentrosymmetric crystals. Such fields allow new polarization phenomena in neutron diffraction and optics and provide, for instance, a new feasibility of a search for the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM). A strong interplanar electric field of the crystal and a sufficiently long time ...
متن کاملStructure determination and Phase Analysis by the use of Neutron diffraction
Neutron diffraction has proven to be an indispensable and highly significant tool since its development 60 years ago. The neutron has unique properties that yield distinct information unavailable otherwise. Chief among these properties is the relative uniformity of the neutron scattering power of atoms across the periodic table, allowing the accurate structure determination of materials compose...
متن کاملModelling of an imaging beamline at the ISIS pulsed neutron source
A combined neutron imaging and neutron diffraction facility, IMAT, is currently being built at the pulsed neutron spallation source ISIS in the U.K. A supermirror neutron guide is required to combine imaging and diffraction modes at the sample position in order to obtain suitable time of flight resolutions for energy selective imaging and diffraction experiments. IMAT will make use of a straigh...
متن کاملAnisotropic displacement parameters for H atoms using an ONIOM approach.
X-ray diffraction data cannot provide anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) for H atoms, a major outstanding problem in charge-density analysis of molecular crystals. Although neutron diffraction experiments are the preferred source of this information, for a variety of reasons they are possible only for a minority of materials of interest. To date, approximate procedures combine rigid-bod...
